Landlords need to know : free attorney representation for tenants

Landlords need to know : SHRIVER PROJECT SUNSET MAY NOT BE IN THE CARDS

Evictions are “summary proceedings” designed to allow landlords to regain possession of their rental units quickly, with minimal costs. It looks like the representatives in Sacramento are mounting a full scale war against the rights of landlords to recover their properties in an efficient manner. It might be time to pool resources and hire an attorney/lobbyist to fight the most pressing issues faced by landlords these days; getting the properties back quickly, without being extorted, bullied, or having to spend $10,000 or more to conduct jury trials.

Shriver Project – Free attorney representation for tenants

If you don’t know what the Shriver Project is, you should look it up. In a nutshell, it provides free attorneys to tenants fighting evictions.
Virtually anyone who has gone through an eviction in Los Angeles County in the last 3-4 years has heard of this group. As a result of increased filing and writ fees (fees paid by landlords), the Shriver attorneys receive $9 million per year to provide tenants with free legal representation in evictions.
While the original law was slated to sunset in December 2017, the Shriver representatives recently attempted to have the sunset provision permanently removed. Luckily, the bill was pulled from the Governor’s desk at the last minute and has not yet been signed. However, a 63 page report drafted by the Shriver advocates was presented in which Shriver presents one sided, biased research to demonstrate how successful they have been at fighting landlords, and attempts to declare that the program is a huge success which should be modeled throughout the entire country.
